Hope Boats - Salcombe

Slipway Facilities in Salcombe

The main launching point for trailer boats in Salcombe is the Batson Creek slipway, operated by Salcombe Harbour Authority.

Located just a short distance from the town centre, Batson provides one of the best public slipways on the South Devon coast.

Key features include:

  • Wide concrete slipway suitable for most trailer boats and RIBs

  • Multiple launch lanes, allowing several boats to launch or recover simultaneously

  • Good access for vehicles and trailers

  • Harbour staff on hand during busy periods to help manage launching

The slipway offers good tidal access, although checking tide times is always recommended for larger boats or deeper draft vessels.

Trailer Parking in Salcombe

After launching, trailers and towing vehicles can be parked at the Batson Boat Park.

Parking is managed by the Salcombe Harbour Authority and is usually pre-booked, particularly during the summer months when demand is high.

Tips for trailer boaters:

  • Book trailer parking in advance during peak season

  • Arrive early on busy weekends

  • Have launching lines and fenders ready before approaching the slipway

This helps keep launching smooth and stress-free for everyone.

Harbour Facilities

Salcombe is well equipped for visiting boaters, making it easy to spend a full day on the water.

Harbour facilities include:

  • Fuel barge supplying petrol and diesel

  • Visitor moorings and pontoons

  • Fresh water and waste disposal

  • Water taxis and harbour launches

  • Nearby marine services and chandlery

Boating Adventures Inside Salcombe Harbour

One of the biggest advantages of launching in Salcombe is the stunning estuary itself. Even on days when offshore conditions are less favourable, there is plenty to explore inside the harbour.

Cruise to Kingsbridge (Tide Dependent)

A fantastic trip is heading up the estuary to the charming market town of Kingsbridge.

The journey winds through peaceful creeks and rolling countryside before reaching the town’s pontoons. It’s a perfect lunch stop with pubs, cafés and shops close to the water.

However, the upper estuary is tidal, so it’s best attempted around mid to high tide.

Explore the Mill Bay and Millbrook Area

On the eastern side of the harbour you’ll find beautiful sheltered anchorages such as Mill Bay and Millbrook.

These areas are ideal for:

  • Anchoring for lunch

  • Paddleboarding

The water here is typically calm and protected, making it perfect for families and relaxed boating.

Coastal Adventures from Salcombe

Once you leave the harbour entrance between Bolt Head and Bolt Tail, the South Devon coastline offers some incredible boating destinations.

Dartmouth

Heading east brings you to the historic harbour town of Dartmouth on the River Dart.

This is one of the most popular boating destinations in the region, with:

  • Visitor pontoons

  • Historic waterfront pubs

  • Dartmouth Castle

  • Excellent restaurants and cafés

It’s a perfect day trip from Salcombe!

Noss Mayo and the River Yealm

To the west lies the beautiful River Yealm and the charming village of Noss Mayo.

The Yealm is known for its stunning river entrance and sheltered anchorage, making it a favourite stop for local boaters.

The Eddystone Lighthouse

For more adventurous boaters, a trip to the iconic Eddystone Lighthouse is an unforgettable experience.

Located around 14 miles offshore, the lighthouse rises dramatically from the reef and is one of the most famous landmarks in British maritime history.
